This achievement validates the school community’s provision of international education and demonstrable outcomes reflecting students’ growth as global citizens. Turning Point joins St. Timothy’s School in Maryland and the International School of Indiana as the only three schools in the United States to achieve International Certification.

CIS further recognizes Turning Point School for its many contributions to the educational innovation process through its participation in the pilot of the International Certification program as one of a select group of schools from around the world, deliberately chosen to highlight their leadership in the advancement of international and intercultural learning for students. The achievement of International Certification is a school-wide accomplishment that has fostered collaboration and whole-school discussion of values related to global citizenship.

Jane Larsson, CIS Executive Director, added: “Through the International Certification process, school communities explore aspects of leadership and institutional approaches that enable the development of students as culturally literate, competent global citizens. Together with the Turning Point school community and others, the outcomes of a school's work in this area are developed through a purposeful, collaborative network of diverse schools, recognized, supported, and challenged to go further. With its strong reputation in the provision of international education, Turning Point has been a valuable contributor to this process.” Learn more here: bit.ly/TP-IC

Turning Point School recently launched their new Toddler Program, which is designed to educate parents on topics relevant to toddlers aged 12 to 28 months. Classes will begin on Tuesday, April 15, and run for ten weeks. The cost of the program is $450 for the ten-week session, although financial assistance is available.

This unique program builds upon Turning Point's philosophy of embracing the whole child and respecting diversity, and is facilitated by Babytalk LA, Los Angeles' preeminent Parenting Group program. The Toddler Program allows parents to explore research-based curriculum and important topics with the help of a trained Babytalk LA facilitator, certified Turning Point Faculty, outside experts, and the collective wisdom of the group. Toddlers attend the sessions along with one parent.

Program Facilitator Vanessa Karubian Saxe, the founder of Babytalk LA, has been running toddler groups for many years, and brings with her a wealth of knowledge about how to create a comfortable play space where toddlers and parents can interact, and topics can be explored in a safe and open format. Vanessa and her team are all Certified Parent Educators, as well as moms themselves.

They will join 90 youth leaders from all over the U.S, as far afield as the Caribbean, India, and Africa. Each team won a place at the Summit based on their innovative ideas on how best to monitor and publicize ocean plastic trash, and also reduce this non-biodegradable waste.

The Algalita POPS Youth Summit offers students a chance to learn about current scientific research on plastic pollution, share their action projects with their peers, and work directly with mentors to help improve their projects’ next steps.

They will be showcasing a project idea that they came up with in class: to make the school community less wasteful by eliminating the need for plastic water bottles. Their goal is to not only raise awareness about the effects of plastic production, but open people's eyes to the truly simple solution to this ongoing problem.

With plastic production set to quadruple by 2050 (260 million tons were produced in 2008), and 85 percent of ocean trash being plastic, it’s going to be all hands on deck to deal with the coming deluge. Turning Point is proud to have a team of dynamic students who will become part of the solution to this growing problem.

Still Life with Iris by Steven Dietz is the first play for young audiences to receive the Kennedy Center's Fund for New American Plays Award. It is a fantastical adventure which centers on a little girl's search for the simplest of things: home. Iris lives with her mom in the land of Nocturno—a magical place in which the workers make, by night, all of the things we see in the world by day. Also, in Nocturno, memories do not reside in people's minds but instead are kept in their coats (called 'Past Coats'). The rulers of Nocturno, the Great Goods, are determined to have the "best" of everything on their island—and therefore take Iris away from her home and bring her to Great Island to be their daughter. To ease the pain of this separation, they remove her Past Coat, leaving her with no memory of her home or her family.

If you enjoy Willy Wonka, The Wizard of Oz, or Alice in Wonderland, then this play is for you.

Our production features an original song, composed specifically for this cast and show. We will also entertain you with a step routine in the Thunder Bottling factory, and some hip hop dancing in the Tunnel of the Unwanted. The play was inspired by Cooper Edens’ Caretakers of Wonder, and our set and costumes are an homage to the illustrations in that book. The sound effects will be created live, on stage, by the members of the ensemble. Premier LA Sound effects artist, Tony Palermo, has collaborated with the director and cast to help sculpt soundscapes and special effects.

Tickets are free and available on a first come, first served basis. To reserve seats in advance, please email Performing Arts Coordinator Jane McEneaney at jmceneaney@turningpointschool.org.
