Bäcoshop is the newest brainchild of chef Josef Centeno, who has already opened five hip restaurants in downtown Los Angeles: Orsa & Winston, Ledlow, PYT, Bar Ama, and Bäco Mercat. I can personally attest to the excellence of Bar Ama (Pork Bell Chicharrón and Mole Enchiladas: yes!), and no less an authority than Jonathan Gold named Bäco Mercat one of the 101 best restaurants in Los Angeles. So it's got bona fides.

Bäcoshop is described as a "fast casual" version of Centeno's food, highlighted by "bäcos": sandwiches made with his "signature flatbread," cooked right before your eyes and filled with "green herb chicken with za’atar, coffee-rubbed steak, braised pork, roasted eggplant [or] shrimp in a chile de árbol sauce."

Continues the article "Centeno’s salads are also on display in a case at the front: a bright orange beet salad with turmeric vinaigrette, 'Caesar' Brussels sprouts with pecorino and roasted cauliflower with wild rice, raisins and pecans. There’s also a grain bowl with burrata, and an option to order a trio of salads."

The article also contains this great quote from chef Centeno, detailing why he's excited to come to Culver City:

"We had been looking for a long time, but this space came up, and Culver City is having kind of a reinvention...It’s exciting to be here with Jordan [Kahn of Destroyer] down the street, Sang [Yoon of Lukshon and Father’s Office] down the street, who has always been ahead of the game, and Akasha [Richmond of Akasha and AR Cucina] across the street."

Local elected officials were among those in attendance.

The Culver City meetings were among 25 other meetings in the Los Angeles area organized by a new group called Swing Left. The group’s purpose is to help Americans who live in non-swing districts provide support to their fellow citizens living in swing districts, i.e. congressional districts in which the elected representative won by a relatively small margin.

Many of the Swing Left groups in Los Angeles, including the two Culver City groups, will focus their efforts on helping voters in the 25th Congressional District unseat their two-time incumbent, Stephen Knight. Knight won reelection in November by a margin of 53.1% to 46.9%, despite Hillary Clinton winning more votes than President Trump in the district. The 25th district includes parts of northern Los Angeles County and parts of Ventura County. Patrick Meaghan, who hosted one of the gatherings, said that his goal was “to show our kids that we aren’t giving up.”

A visit to the 25th district is tentatively scheduled for March 25th. Anyone interested in volunteering in any capacity should sign up at swingleft.org.

The city also wil remove cameras at four approaches/locations: eastbound Washington Place at Centinela Avenue, eastbound Washington Boulevard at Sawtelle Boulevard, and east and west bound Washington Boulevard at Helms Avenue.

Here's what the city's press release has to say on the matter:

"Over the past several years there has been considerable commercial development throughout the City and the volume of vehicles that travel our roads has increased. Culver City streets have become major regional thoroughfares on the West side of Los Angeles and are being utilized by motorists attempting to avoid congested freeways in the area.

"Based on new commercial businesses, vehicular congestion, as well as pedestrians and bicyclists that pass through and around the intersections at Overland Avenue and Washington Boulevard, Sepulveda Boulevard and Washington Boulevard and through National Boulevard and Washington Boulevard, CCPD decided that the red light camera program would be best served by installing photo enforcement equipment at these intersections. Rather than just increase the overall size of our program, we looked at intersections with lower traffic volume and/or fewer red light running incidents and sought to relocate those cameras to intersections with higher traffic volume and congestion (vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists) so to have a greater impact on deterring red light running incidents and improve traffic and pedestrian safety to those areas.

"The program currently operates photo enforcement equipment at eleven intersections with eighteen approaches and with the revisions; it would expand to twelve intersections with twenty approaches."
Lots of Openings in the Culver City Art District this Saturday, January 7tag:culvercitytimes.com,2017-01-05:6303163:BlogPost:575092017-01-05T13:00:00.000ZScupinehttp://culvercitytimes.com/profile/JustinScupine

The plan outlines six general goals for the city:

Increase civic engagement

Enhance the restoration and utilization of Ballona Creek

Improve transportation circulation and reduce traffic

Promote workforce diversity and development

Identify new revenue sources to maintain financial stability

Enhance Culver City's reputation as a city of kindness.

Each goal has several subheads, which you can see below or HERE. But I was especially interested in the sources for new revenue, which includes discussion of a marijuana excise tax as well as a transient occupancy tax for short-term rentals such as AirBNB.

Please share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Here's more detail on the goals:

Objective 3: Increase voter participation

Study vote by mail and election consolidation.

Enhance Birdee’s visibility through additional promotion via printed materials and social media.

Create a student volunteer program for voter registration.

Goal Two: Enhance the restoration and utilization of Ballona Creek

Conduct an in depth study and analysis of the Ballona Creek and trail environs and issues and opportunities relating to recreation and beautification.

Objective 1: Make Ballona Creek more walkable, bikeable, and connected to the city

Hire a consultant to prepare a preliminary Ballona Creek bike and pedestrian plan (plan) in coordination with the city’s general plan update efforts.

Research the reclamation of the Ballona Creek right-of-way. Explore legal, political/jurisdictional, and financial implications.

Work with adjacent property owners to create agreements to improve Ballona Creek’s entry access points and other right-of-way improvements.

Objective 2: Make Ballona Creek a recreational attraction

Identify and determine feasibility of potential Ballona Creek recreational improvements.

Include Ballona Creek recreation improvements in the Culver City recreational master plan and prepare cost estimates.

Add a recreational element to the general plan update.

Goal Three: Improve transportation circulation and reduce traffic congestion

Identify any bicycle and pedestrian barriers in the implementation of the transportation demand management program.

Develop a program to encourage residents to reduce trips by ridesharing and other alternative forms of transportation.

Research and develop alternative transportation programs, such as on-demand fixed route busses; subsidized private ride sharing; a pool for discounted TAP cards; or a program of parking credits to allow less required parking, if the cost savings are allocated to tap cards offered to a percentage of commercial building tenants.

Evaluate the vision zero initiative and other programs, policies, or initiatives that prioritize transportation safety and pursue the elimination of death and severe injury crashes on our roadways.

Goal Four: Promote workforce diversity and development

Conduct and expand outreach to a broader range of individuals to increase employee diversity. Employ creative recruitment techniques and further promote diversity within the city’s organizational culture.

Objective 1: Advance workforce development and succession

Initiate mandatory continuing education for specific job classifications.

Develop efforts to effectively create new revenue sources for the City of Culver City.

Objective 1: Potential retail marijuana excise tax

Based on the outcome of the upcoming statewide ballot measure to legalize the sale of marijuana, the city council would consider whether dispensaries will be permitted in Culver City.

If permitted, the city council would consider a marijuana tax for placement on the ballot during the April 2018 municipal election.

The play takes on the rise of Donald Trump with a currency and satiric bite that rivals last night’s Daily Show.

Writer Jon Robin Baitz (a Pulitzer finalist), director Robert Egan, and actor Harry Groener present the audience with a crass real estate mogul running for president, Kurt Seaman (har har har!). Seaman is, by turns, a malaprop-spewing bully, a cunning negotiator, and a man who always knows who holds the most power in the room (psst: it’s him). He needs a killer suit for his final debate, and the play takes place almost exclusively in the well-appointed back room of an upscale NY tailor during three fittings over three weeks.

Vicuña (named after the suit’s exquisite, imported wool) offers a handful of foils for Seaman’s know-nothing barbarism – including a fiery Iranian-American tailor’s apprentice (an excellent Rariz Monsef channeling Cary Grant) as well as Seaman’s brilliant daughter-turned-campaign-manager, Srilanka (har har har!). But for the most part, they are of interest only inasmuch as they elucidate the monster at the heart of the play.

Vicuña is a funny and frightening night at the theatre. But it would have been even better if it had challenged the audience to respect or even like Seaman. For although the play offers some broadsides against both the Clinton surrogate and the GOP, we are never encouraged to have anything but horror and contempt for Seaman. Preaching to the choir, then, for this Westside audience—but what a sermon!

“Vicuña” runs through November 20, 2016.
In 2011, it was a vampire vs. zombie version of Romeo & Juliet. In 2012, we got a Star Wars version of The Tempest, with Obi Wan Kenobi as Prospero, Princess Leia as Miranda, C3P0 as Ariel, and Jabba the Hutt as Caliban. In 2014, they performed a My Little Pony version of A Midsummer Night's Dream, and last year we got Harry Potter Hamlet.

This year it seems we'll be treated to a Pokemon Go rendition of Romeo and Juliet. The kid-friendly versions are free -- and are always a lot of fun. Check it out on Saturdays and Sundays in August at 11 am. in Media Park.

Media Park is located at 9091 Culver Blvd. Where Culver Blvd. meets Venice Blvd.

And hey, they're basically right next to each other, so why not try both?

Here's what the article had to say about The Corner Bar:

This out-of-the-way Culver City favorite offers an eclectic range of ace cocktails sure to deliver, whether shaken, stirred, or on-tap. From the smoky Taco Truck with mezcal, pineapple, and cinnamon-infused Campari to the Jesse Pink Gin with gin, bitters, coconut liqueur, and orgeat, you’ll find plenty of reliable regulars, as well as seasonal hits like the totally rad Goonies menu with the whisky-hazelnut-cacao combo of the Truffle Shuffle and the rye-espresso-coconut of the Mama Fratelli. And with the added bonus of a knockout food menu from Birch’s Brendan Collins, plan on sticking around for a few rounds.

And about Old Man Bar at Hatchet Hall:

Tucked in the back of Hatchet Hall, this hunting lodge of a cocktail bar is what your grandpa’s favorite bar probably dreams of becoming. From the taxidermied animals and classic vinyl to the well-worn arm chairs and vintage barware, Old Man Bar has all the touches of a thoughtfully crafted bar without feeling like somebody thought too much about it. The obvious drink of choice here is an Old Fashioned, and lucky for you they have an entire menu devoted to the old-timey favorite, with plenty of variations to keep things interesting (if you prefer something on the lighter-side, you’ll find plenty of well-crafted options as well). Just don’t tell grandpa.

According to a recent LA Observed article, the "megadevelopment" and sky-scraper and have been approved by the LA city council and are slated to begin construction in 2018.

The story observes that, since the lot is La Cienega/Jefferson Expo Station adjacent, it "makes civic sense" and that "new stores and restaurants would be welcome by many in the neighborhood," but also points out:

What makes this different from the ordinary politics of growth, density and traffic is that this is creating a permanent new high-rise center in a part of the city that never was one before.

The article also quotes the Los Angeles Times, saying,

In a lawsuit filed last month, the Crenshaw Subway Coalition and Friends of the Neighborhood Integrity Initiative say city officials violated state and local laws when it approved the project. The City Council amended zoning and height restrictions to permit the high-rise.

"I would like to invite you all to a developer's community meeting at Vet's Auditorium on June 21st at 7pm regarding a new project being proposed at 11281 Washington Place, at the intersection of Washington Place and Sawtelle Blvd.

"I have been working with a number of local residents that live around the proposed project.

It is a long time coming, considering that the property has been vacant for more than 20 years. But we are watching it very closely because we would like to have a development that is fitting to our neighborhood. The development proposed plans show that it will be five stories in height with retail stores on the ground floor. Do not be mistaken, we want the property to be developed, but we also would like it to fit the neighborhood. There are no buildings of this magnitude anywhere around, and a five-story building will completely dwarf other buildings in the area.

"In addition to the size, we are also concerned about the parking situation. There will be a lower-level parking garage for the residents of the building, two parking stalls per unit (tandem). Allowing retail stores will have a negative impact on the streets surrounding the project. There are a few streets left in the area that do not have permit parking, but if the developer is allowed retail space, those remaining areas will all have to become permitted. The developer has proposed 14 parking spaces for the businesses and visitors, but they did not account for the employees.

"There have been a number of new developments between the 3900-4100 blocks of Sepulveda Blvd. The projects are welcomed additions of restaurants and services, however, the impact has been felt by the surrounding neighborhoods. The employees are having to park three-to-five blocks away. Allowing another development with retail in the area will only make the matter worse.

"I am hoping that you will be able to attend the meeting and learn about the project for yourself, as always if time permits.

"Thank you in advanced for your interest in this project."
