The Online Community for Culver City – The New Scene
Some people don't like electronic bilboards -- in fact, they are not permitted in Culver City. Last week, the Los Angeles Times reported that the 2nd District Court of Appeal may be leaning toward invalidating permits for 100 signs approved by the Los Angeles City Council in 2006 (including some that lie on the edge of the city, such the one above). According to the sign that has been posted on the former Famima Convenience Store at Overland Ave. and Venice Blvd., SmashBurger is coming to Culver City. Looks good, and the La Jolla location (for example) has mostly 4- and 5-star reviews on Yelp. Count me in.
The evidence:…

There's a new mural in progress behind The Wood restaurant in West Culver City. It's by muralist Mear One, a Los Angeles-based artist known for his often-political street graffiti art. The people I talk to about street art are really psyched about it -- Mear One is a big deal. I definitely admire it's dynamic quality, but I worry about the didactic "GMO" there on the…

Los Angeles Times Theater Critic Charles McNulty reviewed the new play at the Actors' Gang Theatre, saying "there are hearty laughs to be had from this scattershot spray of silliness from 1775."
He continues: "True, the goofy flamboyance often seems a tad effortful. But the fireworks of Sheridan's verbal wit are still mesmerizing. Whenever the focus shifts from the central lovers to the tyrannical patriarch Sir Anthony Absolute and the linguistically…

As one of the happy legion who take the Expo Line from Culver City to downtown Los Angeles, I have tried to be patient with the Culver City parking lot. I understand that the city has probably been reluctant to invest much money in improving the lot, since construction is supposedly eminent on a mixed-use development that will transform the lot. But now months and have passed,…

Early in the article, he quotes one patron who reflects:
Continue"It's supposed to be unclear. It raises the question: Whose authority do you trust, who's to say this is real science or art? The stuff is so bizarre and…
