The Online Community for Culver City – The New Scene
After my article earlier in this week, Warren Brand -- the curator of the the Branded Arts Building, the foremost mural mecca in Los Angeles -- contacted me to let me know that the Branded Arts Building is slated to come down next week at the end of October. Brand writes, "Hey Justin, I saw your recent article. The building is set for demo next week. They will be building a perimeter construction wall and start bulldozing our beloved murals."
However, Brand also shared his plans for saving the murals: "In regards to the art that was removed, I had the art professionally removed prior to the scheduled demo. I recently had a meeting with the art dept head, principal, and super intentent of Culver City High School. We have been given the green light to effectively repurpose and install these art works for permanent display at the school."
Brand is documenting the whole process. "For the demo we are renting Phantom cameras to film the whole thing in high speed and super slow motion. I just launched the trailer for our Branded Arts Documentary. Please support and share! We have interviews with the building owner, the principal from the school next door, city officials, dozens of CC residents, and of course the artists." As the trailer says, the movie will be a chance to "pay homage to this inspiring community monument and one spectacular ride." Well said.
Check out a trailer for the documentary HERE. It features great footage of the artists at work, including
Yeah, that's one half of Herakut there at the end...

After the first few murals went up on the building on the Southwest corner of Washington and National, I wondered if it was truly spontaneous graffiti or planned, commissioned art. It eventually became clear, as the murals spread and became more and more complex, that they were indeed planned for the properties.
I've found it interesting that there's still a grey area as far as what's considered either art or just plain vandalism when it comes to spray can street art. Would the public and/or city authorities attitudes change if these same murals were done out of pure spontaneity in guerrilla art fashion? Does legality or public opinion govern what gets saved and what gets painted over?
Supercool that they're going to the high school!
Awww man... Well, I guess it was destined to happen at some point. Time to take a trip over there this weekend and get some pictures of these amazing murals before it's too late. Looking forward to checking out the documentary though. Why can't we have more murals like this in Culver City? Art is what gives a city character and substance. It also gives you an excuse to just take time out of your day to enjoy art and, well, fuel the soul!
