Vote This Tuesday -- And Vote Yes on Measure CC

Be sure to vote in the statewide direct primary election this Tuesday, June 3. You can find or verify the address of your polling place on the back of your sample ballot booklet or HERE.

And let me add my voice to that of the Culver City Chamber of Commerce, the Culver City Democratic Club, the Culver City Federation of Teachers, the United Parents of Culver City, not to mention !00 percent of the Culver City School Board and 100 percent of the Culver City Council  -- in support of Culver City Measure CC.

If Measure CC is passed, a $106 million bond will be issued that will be used to address basic health, safety and maintenance needs at each of the five elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school in Culver City -- and help provide Culver City students with access to the technology, etc., that will prepare them for college and careers.

That $106 million means that each Culver City homeowner will pay .00048 times the assessed value of their home each year -- eg., if your home's assessed value is $600,000, you'll pay an extra $288 each year in property tax. That's admittedly a pretty hefty price tag, but keeping the city's schools up to snuff is really not optional. The quality of the schools in Culver City are one of the main reasons that I moved here, and I know they are one of the reasons property values remain high in the city.

Culver City Unified School District recently assessed the needs of all the schools in the district and summarized their findings as well how the bond money would be spent in a Facilities Master Plan, which you can read HERE. The projects include:

  • Repairing or replacing deteriorating school floors, walls, windows, leaky roofs, plumbing systems and rest rooms.
  • Bringing schools up to modern standards for fire and earthquake safety, removing asbestos, fungus and other hazardous materials, and install needed fencing, lighting, locks and security to keep students safe.
  • Installing or upgrading air conditioning, heating and air filtration to ensure healthy learning environments.
  • Upgrading and repairing aging school electrical systems, and replacing science labs and equipment so that our schools can offer modern classroom technology and computer science to students.
  • Providing the technological equipment and the modern classrooms necessary to ensure that all of our students are college and career ready.
  • Providing permanent classrooms for our students in the continuation high school.

For more information on the measure, you may want to visit the CulverCityKids.org website, HERE. And/or watch this video that summarizes the argument in favor of the measure.
