Area C, a 64-acre portion of the Uplands area of Ballona Creek Wetlands, is a pretty but troubled piece of open, Culver City-adjacent land owned by State of California. The Annenberg Foundation had put a $50-million proposal on the table that offered to make extensive improvements to the land but also included a controversial interpretive center and domestic animal adoption component – a move that put them at odds with some local environmental groups. Now the Annenberg Foundation has announced that it has rescinded its proposal.

Said Jordan Traverso of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (the organization charged with determining how to proceed with the restoration of Area C). “After considerable thought and reflection, the Annenberg Foundation’s leadership has made a decision to suspend its continuing involvement in the restoration planning for the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve. The Foundation informed us of this decision after a comprehensive evaluation of all the community-development projects it is involved in that resulted in a reprioritization of resources and focus.”
