(Culver City, CA ---) On Sunday, March 25th at 2 p.m., The Mayme A. Clayton Library
& Museum, located at 4130 Overland Avenue in Culver City, will present another of the
late Mimi Melnick's Double M Jazz Salons. The much-anticipated concert will headline,
Darynn Dean and her Jazz Collective. This unique ensemble, will feature Clayton
Cameron, drums; Paul Cornish, piano; Aaron Shaw, tenor sax; Christopher Astoquillca,
alto sax; Brian Schwartz, trumpet and Michael Alvidrez, bass.

Vocalist Darynn Dean was raised in a musical family that includes her cousin, pianist
Jamael Dean, her grandfather, the legendary Donald Dean and her father, Donald Dean,
Jr., who is also a drummer. Darynn and Jamael are among the new artists to receive
critical acclaim. Referring to this rich family tradition, their grandfather and proud
patriarch, says, “I’m glad they’re carrying it on.”

At age 20, Darynn already displays a seasoned maturity beyond her years. She’s a
riveting, rising star who has earned the respect of her peers, colleagues and fans, alike.
An astute storyteller, Darynn’s vast range, incredible poise and engaging stage
presence, captivate her audiences as she caresses each lyric. Darynn can also swing
intently, or with a relaxed feeling, in any setting.

Ms. Dean attended Mira Costa High School and performed with the Jazz America
Youth Band, the Multi-cultural Choir and the Advanced Women’s Chorale. She won a
Bronze Medal at the NAACP’s Act-So Competition, First Place in the Dolo Coker
Foundation Awards and garnered a coveted Roderick D. Jones Scholarship.
In 2014, as a distinguished member of the Grammy Foundation’s Jazz Choir, Ms.
Dean appeared with Delfeayo Marsalis, Hubert Laws and Dave Koz. Additional honors
include a Gold Medal in the Young Arts Competition and a Spotlight Award, in 2015
.
Ms. Dean has performed at several popular venues including the Kennedy Center in
Washington, D.C., Miami’s New World Performing Arts Center, The Central Avenue Jazz
Festival and the fabled Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach.

Darynn currently attends the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.
Whenever she returns home on a break from school, Darynn frequently attends a vocal
workshop at The World Stage, where she studies under the watchful eye of her vocal
coach, pianist and composer, Howlette Smith. Barbara Morrison is also one of Darynn’s
influential mentors.

Doors open at 12:30 p.m. At 1:00 p.m., Darynn will briefly reflect on her life and
career, in an informal discussion with (J)azz historian Jeffrey Winston. The concert will
begin at 2:00 p.m. and conclude at 5:00 p.m., with a brief intermission.

In 1996, Jazz Baroness Mimi Melnick launched her first salon at her Encino home on
Strawberry Drive. Mimi loved (J)azz. She organized the intimate salons to support L.A.'s
(J)azz community. Producer Steve Isoardi notes, “We’re into the 23rd year of Mimi’s
unique series!”

"We are very proud and extremely honored to carry the torch", said Executive
Director Lloyd Clayton. The MCLM, collects, preserves, exhibits and celebrates,
the vast history and cultural heritage of Americans of African descent.

Performance Portraits, a poignant exhibit by photographer Bob Barry, includes
stunning images of iconic, world-class, artists. It may be viewed before the concert
and during intermission. The exhibit is free.
