featuring HARVEY PITTEL

(Sopranino, Soprano, Alto, and Straight Alto Saxophones)

PROGRAM: This eclectic concert features music that embraces the classics on through the Jazz Age and the Big Band Era that will appeal to a wide range of musical tastes. The concert begins with Rossini’s rousing William Tell Overture and ends with the glorious Symphony No. 2 in D-major by Sibelius. In between these two pieces, the Los Angeles Doctors Symphony Orchestra proudly features renowned saxophonist, Harvey Pittel, playing four different saxophones in a dazzling medley that extends from a Pittel arrangement of Tomaso Albinoni’s Concerto “Saint Marc” to Jimmy Dorsey’s Oodles of Noodles, and then some— a virtual concert-within-a-concert.

OUR SOLOIST: HARVEY PITTEL has played 2000 concerts with such organizations as The New York and Los Angeles Philharmonics and Boston, Baltimore, and Seattle Symphonies, working with conductors who include Zubin Mehta, Seiji Ozawa, and Michael Tilson Thomas, and has toured for decades with his Harvey Pittel Trio and Saxophone Quartet. He has appeared on the Today show and Live from Lincoln Center and at the Spoleto, Brevard, Aspen, Tanglewood, and Marlboro festivals. Recent performances include an appearance with The New York Philharmonic Chamber Soloists at Lincoln Center. A Professor Emeritus from The University of Texas at Austin, his teaching career additionally spans the Mannes School in New York City; Boston University; California State Colleges at Fullerton, Long Beach, and San Diego; and USC. He is currently on the faculties of Cal State LA and the Colburn School. His 28 recordings are available at Amazon, iTunes, and his multimedia web site, harveypittel.com.

THE LOS ANGELES DOCTORS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA (www.ladso.org), now in its 66th season, led by Maestro Ivan Shulman and in his 29th consecutive year as Music Director, is one of the oldest medically-oriented community orchestras in the United States. Its mission is to provide enrichment of the communities it serves through the healing power of music, to support medical causes, and to support both young and emerging professional musicians in their pursuit of the discipline and joys found in musical expression.
