Castelli Art Space is proud to announce an exhibit of abstract expressionist photography by MYLES LEE, curated by Peter Frank. Lee attempts, with unphotoshopped photography of natural subjects, to recreate, in a painterly fashion, what an abstract expressionist painter might have done in plein air armed with a camera instead of a brush. He subordinates the reality of otherwise ordinary subjects in the natural world to powerful abstractions dominated by form, composition, balance, color, texture, and light. Working frequently in Big Sur, Lee, a former cardiac surgeon, current President of the Los Angeles Doctors Symphony Orchestra, novelist, and librettist, has been a finalist in three juried exhibits at the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel, California. His work resides in private collections coast to coast. Most recently, seven of his images have been added to the permanent art collection of the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.
FROM “MYLES LEE: IN NATURE’S MIRROR by PETER FRANK:“By finding art in nature—to the extent that he credits nature for being the artist and himself only for documenting that art—Myles Lee finds a divine spark in nature itself, one equal to the spark we presume in our own species. The beauty and drama of land and ocean, wind and sky, sun and moon in Lee’s cosmology simply do not simply constitute the natural world, they present it, in the infinite variety, Lee avers, nature makes itself, and is artful in the making…Lee unleashes nature's glorious vocabulary...these photographs praise the exquisite poise of natural forces...these are the photographs of a scientific mind seduced by the mystery of the natural world...the interplay of natural forces maintains a breathtaking, even daunting immediacy. Myles Lee lets nature act itself out. His photographs do not describe nature, nor even capture it: they reflect it. Yes, as in a mirror. "
The exhibit is open daily from 10AM through 6 PM, or by appointment. A private reception will be held on Wednesday, October 24 from 6-10 PM. The grand opening will be on Saturday, October 27 from 6-10 PM. Valet parking will be available for those two evenings only; even so, Castelli recommends using Uber or Lyft as parking may otherwise be limited.
