Event Description

On Sunday, April 10^th, Sholem welcomes California Calls, a coalition of non-profits that motivates disenfranchised Californians to become empowered voters. They will discuss their efforts to revise Prop 13, the 1978 tax initiative that, among other things, has allowed huge corporations to get away with miniscule property tax payments, thereby crippling California schools, parks, and libraries. They will also discuss upcoming ballot measures on taxes for schools, minimum wage and the death penalty.

Attorney James Woodson, Organizing Coordinator for California Calls, previously served in a variety of capacities within the Democratic National Committee, the New Jersey Democratic State Committee, and Obama For America. James was a lead organizer for the New Jersey Health Care For America Now campaign and served as co-Counsel for the New Jersey Congressional Redistricting Commission in 2012. Michele Prichard, California Calls Senior Advisor, is Director of Common Agenda at the Liberty Hill Foundation which provides grants, training and alliance-building to grassroots, social justice groups in Los Angeles. Michele is a long-time activist in Los Angeles who has served on the boards of Venice Community Housing and the LA Coalition to End Hunger and Homelessness.
