Event Description

The third performance in the 1988 series will be on Sunday, August 6, 2017 in and around Technicolor Drip, the permanent artwork by Jen Stark located at PLATFORM in Culver City.  This dance performance by Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre will take place in 12-minute intervals between 1-3PM. An outdoor projection screening of Technicolor Drip, the performance, will be shown from 8-9PM that same evening at the Helms Bakery District Courtyard.

The performance Technicolor Drip is inspired by technology and conceived as a durational experience—intended to be viewed once or multiple times throughout the afternoon. The dancers will perform simultaneously in and around the window frames of the parking structure where the mural, Technicolor Drip, is installed and inside the glass art vitrines (boxes) on the exterior of the parking garage facing Washington Boulevard, where temporary artworks by Jen Stark are located. The dancers will rotate positions every 12 minutes between the window frames and the glass vitrines. The dancers’ movement will accentuate the lines of the painting and follow the free-flow nature of the ‘drip’ while wearing rainbow-inspired costumes reflecting the artworks’ color palette. The technology theme continues when the viewer downloads the performance music via their smartphone, as they walk or roll by the parking structure engaging with the performance.

Technicolor Drip, by contemporary artist Jen Stark, is a mural located on the exterior wall of the PLATFORM parking garage, facing Landmark Blvd. The title references an old coloring process used in 20th century film production, while the rainbow colors echo the song Somewhere Over the Rainbow from a film made in Culver City: The Wizard of Oz. Jen Stark also created two temporary artworks, inspired by Technicolor Drip, installed inside the hanging glass art vitrines (boxes) on PLATFORM’s parking garage exterior facing Washington Blvd.

1988 features four site-specific dance performances by Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre, centering on six featured artworks from Culver City’s public art collection. The 1988 event series celebrates the 1988 adoption of the Art in Public Places Program Ordinance and will highlight the public art and performing arts grant program as primary components of the ordinance. Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre joins 1988 Producer and former Culver City Cultural Affairs Commissioner, Marla Koosed, who worked closely on the most recent ordinance update. Together they toast Culver City’s Centennial and present 1988 with performances throughout 2017.
