The fifth annual Coastal Discovery & Stewardship Celebration takes place January 13-February 28, 2018, the perfect time for visitors to Immerse themselves in the local marine life, coastal heritage and natural attractions along the iconic CA Highway 1 Discovery Route (H1DR). Coastal San Luis Obispo County, along with California State Parks and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary invites you to enjoy a selection of 36 Coastal Discovery events and award-winning Stewardship Travel activities that will enhance your connection to the California Central Coast.
What is Stewardship Travel?
California’s central coast award-winning Stewardship Travel Program provides a unique menu of over 50 activities for visitors to play, care, and connect deeper all year long with local residents, scientists, naturalists, wildlife, and heritage sites located along the H1DR. During the annual Coastal Discovery & Stewardship Celebration, additional Stewardship activities are offered inviting visitors to add meaning and fun while immersing deeply in the natural and cultural heritage experiences that California’s unique central coast has to offer.
Must-Do Coastal Discovery & Stewardship Activities 2018
There is fun, adventure and discovery in all 10 destinations along the 101 mile H1DR. From free movies at Hearst Castle Theater to Sharks after Dark at the Central Coast Aquarium, come experience the best of Highway 1 during this special time of year. Savor the unique local wine and food pairings featured by PasoWine during the 4th Annual Blendfest on the Coast, travel the 6 tasting rooms along the Pacific Coast Wine Trail or jump onto a Hummer or ATV to cruise the Oceano Dunes.
Free IMAX Film at Hearst Castle: Disneynature Oceans
Don’t miss the annual Coastal Discovery & Stewardship Film Festival at the Hearst Castle Theater, Saturdays at 6pm throughout the six-week celebration. This years’ feature film: Disneynature Oceans is a spectacular story about remarkable creatures under the sea. Stunning images await viewers as they journey into the depths of a wonderland filled with mystery, beauty and power. It’s an unprecedented look at deep-water creatures through their own eyes. Incredible state-of-the-art underwater filmmaking will take your breath away as you migrate with whales, swim alongside a great white shark and race with dolphins at play. Filled with adventure, comedy and drama, Oceans is a fascinating and thought-provoking experience you will not soon forget.
Lodging Specials
Located halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, the H1DR is made up of ten diverse artisan towns and seaside villages starting just south of Big Sur from Ragged Point & San Simeon, Cambria, Cayucos, and Los Osos/Baywood Park, to Avila Beach & Valley, Edna Valley, Arroyo Grande Valley, Oceano and Nipomo, just south of San Luis Obispo. Many properties along the route are offering special lodging packages during the Coastal Discovery & Stewardship six-week celebration.
