Vocalist Darynn Dean was raised in a musical family that includes her cousin, pianist

Jr., who is also a drummer. Darynn and Jamael are among the new artists to receive
critical acclaim. Referring to this rich family tradition, their grandfather and proud
patriarch, says, “I’m glad they’re carrying it on.”

At age 20, Darynn already displays a seasoned maturity beyond her years. She’s a
riveting, rising star who has earned the respect of her peers, colleagues and fans, alike.
An astute storyteller, Darynn’s vast range, incredible poise and engaging stage
presence, captivate her audiences as she caresses each lyric. Darynn can also swing
intently, or with a relaxed feeling, in any setting.

Ms. Dean attended Mira Costa High School and performed with the Jazz America
Youth Band, the Multi-cultural Choir and the Advanced Women’s Chorale. She won a
Bronze Medal at the NAACP’s Act-So Competition, First Place in the Dolo Coker
Foundation Awards and garnered a coveted Roderick D. Jones Scholarship.

Dean appeared with Delfeayo Marsalis, Hubert Laws and Dave Koz. Additional honors
include a Gold Medal in the Young Arts Competition and a Spotlight Award, in 2015
.
Ms. Dean has performed at several popular venues including the Kennedy Center in
Washington, D.C., Miami’s New World Performing Arts Center, The Central Avenue Jazz
Festival and the fabled Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach.
.
Darynn currently attends the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.
Whenever she returns home on a break from school, Darynn frequently attends a vocal
workshop at The World Stage, where she studies under the watchful eye of her vocal
coach, pianist and composer, Howlette Smith. Barbara Morrison is also one of Darynn’s
influential mentors.
.
Doors open at 12:30 p.m. At 1:00 p.m., Darynn will briefly reflect on her life and
career, in an informal discussion with (J)azz historian Jeffrey Winston. The concert will
begin at 2:00 p.m. and conclude at 5:00 p.m., with a brief intermission.
.
In 1996, Jazz Baroness Mimi Melnick launched her first salon at her Encino home on
Strawberry Drive. Mimi loved (J)azz. She organized the intimate salons to support L.A.'s
(J)azz community. Producer Steve Isoardi notes, “We’re into the 23rd year of Mimi’s
unique series!”
