The Online Community for Culver City – The New Scene
The City Council of Culver City will present a special proclamation on March 12 to a local Girl Scouts troop in observance of the organization’s centennial anniversary.
A ‘100th Anniversary Proclamation’ will be presented to members of Culver City Troop 4645, who will accept the honor on behalf of local Girl Scout Council, Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles (GSGLA). An official ceremony at the City Council Meeting beginning 7 p.m. on Monday, March 12 at Culver City Hall, 9770 Culver Boulevard. Culver City Council Meetings are free and open the public.
“City Council's proclamation is an important public recognition of the role Culver City's Girls Scout troops play in teaching our girls to be leaders and to contribute to the betterment of our community,” said Laura Jane Kessner, Leader for Troop 4645.
Hundreds of girls ranging from second to fifth graders participate in one of Culver City's dozens of Girl Scout troops. Some of their local community service projects include trash collection along Ballona Creek, an “SEB Wheels" event in conjunction with Safe Routes to Schools and Culver City Bicycle Coalition to promote bicycle safety and repair, and an effort to collect pet food, blankets and towels for the West LA Animal Shelter. Some girls will also be joining Scouts from all over the Los Angeles area to collect items for a regional food bank as part of the Girl Scouts ‘Feed Your Neighbor’ program.
Girl Scouts of the USA is marking its hundredth anniversary with a number of commemorative activities and events nationally and has enlisted Congressional support to help launch their ‘To Get Her There’ campaign to foster leadership skills among girls and young women.
Locally, GSGLA has hosted the Girl Scouts Anniversary Float in 2012’s Tournament of Roses Parade, created an online ‘Green Directory’ that aims to re-connect with 100,000 Girl Scout alumnae, and a holding a county-wide service project to collect 100,000 lbs. of food for local pantries on Saturday, March 10.
Girl Scouts was founded in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low, who endeavored to teach girls and young women to be self-reliant and resourceful, a creed enshrined in the group’s “three c’s”: courage, confidence and character.
