Culver City Council Candidate Daniel Lee was cheered by an overflow crowd at his campaign kickoff Sunday night, November 19th, at the home of Culver City School Board Member Kelly Kent, Ph.D. A wildly enthusiastic cross-section of Culver City residents showed up to voice their support, while a host of civic leaders spoke at the event, praising Lee’s service, commitment, and vision for the city’s future.

Former Los Angeles City Controller Rick Tuttle served as master of ceremonies, introducing the line-up of speakers, which included Culver City Council Member Meghan Sahli-Wells, Vice Mayor Thomas Small, School Board Member Kelly Kent, and Andy Shrader, LA City Councilmember Paul Koretz’s Director of Environmental Affairs, Water Policy & Sustainability.

“I’m proud to be here to share my support for Daniel Lee,” Sahli-Wells told the packed room. “Daniel has dedicated himself to public service. He served in the military, he’s led national political organizing movements, he’s worked professionally with outstanding nonprofits, and he’s had a long-standing commitment to Culver City’s youth, volunteering in our schools and our Teen Center, as well as serving as Chair of Culver City’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee. He is perfect for the job of Culver City Council Member.”

“The housing crisis is affecting the school district in profound ways,” added School Board Member Kelly Kent. “We get excellent teachers, but they can’t afford to live here. We need another visionary on the City Council like Daniel who understands the importance of the housing issue.”

Lee spoke movingly at the event, describing his passion for helping others, his ideas for improving Culver City, and his commitment to fight for underdog voices in our community. He stressed the importance of small municipalities like Culver City standing up for our local values, protecting residents from environmental harm, for example, when the Federal Environmental Protection Agency seeks to weaken those protections.

“If the Federal government takes steps to silence people who disagree with their policies,” Lee stated, “Then we must work even harder locally to make sure that the voices of the underserved are not only listened to, but empowered to be full, active members of our community.”
