Fintan Magee, the Australian-born street artist responsible for the huge pieces pictured above and below, will be painting a new mural at the corner of Lindblade and Sepulveda in Culver CIty, starting this Saturday, May 24.
Culver City resident Dan O’Brien, who is helping to coordinate Magee’s visit and involvement in both mural projects, says Magee won’t waste any time once he arrives. “I’m picking him up at the airport at 6:30 a.m.,” he said, “and we’re going straight to Home Depot to get his supplies!" Magee will spend approximately five days painting the mural, so head over to Lindblade and Sepulveda some time of this long weekend to see the artist at work.
After he completes the mural, Magee will move to Culver City High School to paint another. He will also mentor students from the school’s Academy of Visual and Performing Arts (AVPA) as they paint their own mural.
“Street art is important anywhere and to have strong visible culture is incredibly important,” Magee told the Daily Telegraph in Sydney. “I come from Brisbane which is completely devoid of public art, and it is not a nice environment for creative, freethinking people. Public art is very important because not everyone can go to a gallery every day. It is important to make art part of everyday life.”
Comment
While I think it's wonderful that murals are being commissioned in Culver City, I would like to know if Culver City or Los Angeles area artists were considered. We have a long tradition of muralism in L.A. that continues today so I was surprised to hear that an Australian artist was brought in for the job. Is there more to the story?
