It's out of focus, but that's unmistakably the Half-Moon Motel's (great) neon sign on Sepulveda Blvd. between Washington Place and Venice Blvd. in Culver City behind (the great) Nick Nolte in the closing moments of Episode 2 of HBO's "Luck." Somehow it's not surprising that a Michael Mann vehicle would exploit some of this block's vintage neon.
The sequence begins with a the front of the Cinema Bar at 3967 Sepulveda Blvd., digitally (or actually) made-over to be named "The Long Shot," to bring more in line with the series' horse racing milieu.
Here's what the Cinema Bar actually looks like (during the day):
Later in the sequence, we also get a nice view of the sign of Villa Italian restaurant down the block at 3973 Sepulveda Boulevard.
Here's what the Half-Moon Motel sign looks like when it's in focus. Great, right?

Yeah, hard enough understanding the arcane language of the horse racing world, much less the mumbling of Nolte, Hoffman and the Peruvian trainer. Nice to watch though and thankful they're shooting locally for all the people who need those jobs. We'll see how long it lasts!
It's worse than that. I can't understand 75% of what the Peruvian trainer says nor about 25% of what Dustin Hoffman says. I think someone needs to talk to at craft services.
Awesome, now if I could only understand a quarter of what Nick Nolte's dialogue is. Have another shot of tequila Nick!
