The Online Community for Culver City – The New Scene
Donna Sternberg & Dancers will present its latest science-inspired work, Dark Energy, at the Veterans Memorial Building in Culver City this Sunday, November 10, at 3:00 pm. The site–specific performance will begin in the Rotunda Room of the Veteran's Building, where the company will talk about some of the properties of dark energy and demonstrate how it uses them for the dance’s inspiration. The performance will proceed to the outside plaza where the dancers will travel throughout the courtyard space. Live music by composer/musician Ken Christianson will accompany the event.
Dark Energy is an extension of Donna Sternberg & Dancers science series, which seeks to build bridges between science and art by using scientific principles as inspiration for their dance. In November of 2011, for example, the troupe brought The Flowering of Desire to Culver City, which (in a interview I conducted) Sternberg explained in this way: "I began examining the topic of desire ... through the lens of plant biology, looking at desire from the plant's point of view as well as the human desires that connect us to plants."
Sunday's performance is supported in part by grants from the Culver City Art in Public Places Program, with support from Sony Picture Entertainment, the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and the Puffin Foundation.
The Veterans Memorial Building is located at 4117 Overland Ave.
