The Online Community for Culver City – The New Scene
The Los Angeles Doctors Symphony Orchestra will perform a free concert this Sunday, November 23, at 3 pm at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Culver City. The program will include excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake” and “Sleeping Beauty;” Brahms’ “Hungarian Dance;” Stravinsky’s “Firebird;” Ravel’s “Minuet Antique;” and more.
Soloist Mariano Dugatkin will be featured playing Piazzolla’s romantic music for the tango on a bandoneón -- a type of concertina popular in Argentina. Designed by Heinrich Band, German sailors and workers brought the instrument with them to South America in the late 1800’s.
Founded in 1953 (this is the opening concert of the orchestra’s 61st season), the LA Doctors Symphony Orchestra is one of the oldest community orchestras in the United States. Originally composed of only medical professionals, the orchestra now welcomes all accomplished musicians. Since 1990, LADSO (www.ladso.org) has been under the baton of Music Director Dr. Ivan Shulman.
Veterans Memorial Auditorium is located at 4117 Overland Ave.
