The Online Community for Culver City – The New Scene
Invertigo Dance Theatre is presenting three Sunday dance programs in October at the Brasil Brasil Cultural Center in Culver City. On consecutive Sundays starting on the 14th, three dance companies will perform work -- and each choreographer has been challenged to find some interesting way to demystify the process by which dance is created, allowing audiences to experience the fun, frustration, inspiration, problem-solving, complexities and simplicities of dance-making. Admission for each of the performances is $15.

According to Invertigo’s Artistic Director Laura Karlin, this series is inspired by “the constant experience I have of walking out of contemporary dance show and hearing people saying, ‘I didn’t get it.’ I started to wonder, ‘What is it, exactly? Why do people feel like there’s a right and wrong way to experience dance? How can we as artists and audiences come together to change that?”
Invertigo’s piece is “Descent of the Docent” and a museum guide (docent) will escort the audience through the experience of a contemporary dance piece. But it’s not your normal tour. The dance talks back, the docent steals the spotlight, the dancers move the docent through space, and the “it” we are meant to get is transformed, lost, found and changed into the dance itself. It is a playful look at how we understand and interact with art.
The rest of the companies will all present work that challenges both choreographers and audience members to bite into rich, vibrant work and create an open dialogue about the artistic process.
Tickets for the shows can be purchased HERE.
The Brasil Brasil Cultural Center is located at 11928 Washington Blvd.
