To celebrate the opening of The Rivals at The Actor's Gang Theatre (and the troupe's 30th anniversary) Tim Robbins and Actors Gang co-founder David Schweizer dropped by KCRW to talk to Which Way, LA? host Warren Olney about "the challenge and fun of making a show with period language come alive for a modern audience–as well as the challenge and fun of running a nonprofit theater in these troubled economic times."
The Rivals, a new staging of a play from 1795 by Richard Binsley Sheridan opened last weekend and continues through mid-November.
Here’s how the troupe describes the play: “Called 'a luscious feast of language and humor' and set in the notorious resort of Bath, the events of The Rivals are set spinning when a group of obsessed characters descend upon the town -- fortune hunters, filthy rich single girls, irate guardians, wily valets, plucky maids -- all positioning themselves to fulfill their desires for love and money! Fueled by gossip, intrigue, mistaken identities and epic generational conflicts, Sheridan's sparkling cast of characters includes the mythically comical "Mrs. Malaprop" who invents the mis-use of language that even today bears her name. Expect mayhem!”
Regular tickets are $25 (although all Thursdays are Pay-What-You-Can).
