61-year-old Diana Nyad -- who frequently uses the Culver City Plunge for her swimming training -- is currently attempting to swim the 103 miles from Cuba to the United States. She began her attempt at 4:45 p.m. on Sunday (yesterday). CNN reported that at 12:45 p.m. PDT on Monday, she continued to be in good spirits on the swim that is expected to last around 60 hours.
Here's a Reuters story where you can learn more about her background. Among other details, it explains, "Nyad will be protected by a surrounding electrical field from a product called Shark Shield and by divers who will watch for sharks and drive them away if they get too close." Yikes!
And here's a great one-minute video that will have you rooting for Diana even more. In it, she describes herself as having "a heart at peace with the joy of the world, and a mind that's full of courage and not afraid." Absolutely.
The Culver City Municipal Plunge is located at 4175 Overland Avenue.
Thanks very much to Scott Malsin -- Culver CIty's Vice Mayor and CulverCityTimes.com member -- for a heads up on this story.
