Periodically, I post a picture of something in Culver City that is 'hiding in plain sight.' Last week I asked: Do you know where in Culver City this "jungle cat" is?

Personally I had never seen these cougars before I spotted them on a rainy day last week (explaining the horrible quality of these pics)), so I didn't expect anyone to know the answer. Contrary to my expectations, this entry generated quite few responses, if you include those on Culver CIty Times' Facebook page, where Bernadette Sheridan correctly identified it as being "Near the Mall on Slauson." The game's official winner, however, is none other than Doug Lemon -- multiple "Where Am I" champ.

Here's what Doug editorializes in the comments section of the game post: "This is the southeast corner of Slauson and Hannum.  This is the first time I have actually known immediately the location of a mystery photo. I am only disappointed that I don't get to go searching. I have always thought that it is a poor location for this sculpture because it is not a place where there are very many pedestrians, only automobiles speeding by for only a passing glance."

The sculpture is called Cougars I and II, and the artist is Gwynn Murrill from 1991. Here's what the Culver City web site has to say about the artist and the work:

Gwynn Murrill is a sculptor who lives and works in Los Angeles and whose subject matter focuses on animals. Ms. Murrill's work is in the collection of the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena as well as corporate and private collections. She has completed several public art commissions for the City of Los Angeles (California Cougars, 1990; Angel, 1990; and, Coyotes, 1993) and the City of Santa Monica (The Cat, 1988).
