Ciclavia opens historic MLK and Central blvds - the Soul of LA and the home of West Coast Jazz - to bikes and pedestrians Sunday, Dec. 7

One of the greatest community events to hit LA - Ciclavia - comes Sunday to Leimert Park - the Soul of LA.

Ciclavia (pronounce it as you like) closes major streets to cars and opens them to walkers, bikers, strollers, unicyclists and the like. Click here for all the details.

This is a slideshow of my trip from Leimert Park to the 2011 Ciclavia that spanned from Boyle Heights to East…

Culver City kid VerBS featured tonight at LACMA's hip hop concert

Let me introduce to you one of the treasures of the Los Angeles community, a Culver City kid and Hamilton High grad: Verbs.

This youngster has made quite an underground impact with his rhymes and his eclectic music tastes. I love his honest and often humorous takes on life in LA, taking public transportation, new found feelings of commitment and the challenges of growing up today, which he lays over smooth beats and sometimes a live band.

But I've…

The tough terrain at the Steps of Culver City - Last leg closed?

Does anybody have an update on the Stairs of Culver City at the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook?

I was there last Sunday in the windstorm - just beautiful - and came upon the washed out trail at the bottom.

It was marked as closed so we hiked up the street. The steps were open at the top but as you hiked down it wasn't clear where to return to the road. So…

Own your park - some TLC for Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook

Have you heard about this budget crisis? Well everybody is doing what they can to get us through these tough times, but there have been lots of cutbacks. Maybe you've noticed. Unfortunately it's expensive to fix potholes and sidewalks yourself.

Portion of Ballona Creek bike path closed through Wednesday for improvements

Last week I was riding the newest part of the Ballona Creek Bike Path with my wife, starting at Kronenthal Park, and heading all the way to the ocean.

While happy to see the section opened after it as closed for years, it was disappointing how rough the path was where it was repaired with asphalt and all the graffiti. Especially when you compare this sections to the beautiful…

Fireworks in Culver City and Los Angeles

Despite the fact that fireworks are banned in Los Angeles and many of its sister cities, they really know how to do the Fourth of July right.

My wife loves firework displays. In LA alone, we've seen fireworks from the Colorado St. bridge in Pasadena for the Rose Bowl show and from the deck of a home in the Palos Verdes hills watching the panorama from Carson's Home Depot to San Pedro's Queen Mary. We watched the Culver City show with neighbors from a…

Culver City ArtWalk 2011

We rode our bikes to the Culver City Artwalk Sunday, parked on Washington and Helms and took in the culture. We did a loop over to La Cienega and still took in less than half the galleries.

The galleries on Washington were much more generous with their snacks and drinks by the way.

That forced us to stop at the Mandrake, the cool little bar on La Cienega, and had some refreshments along with a brie and arugula sandwich.…
