The Online Community for Culver City – The New Scene
This Monday the City Council approved the renaming of Bush Way in Culver City to honor Albert and Ursula Vera. Ursula and Albert served as the owners and proprietors of Sorrento's Market, a Culver City landmark on Sepulveda Blvd since 1963. The street, which is adjacent to Sorrento's Market, will be named for Ursula, who passed away in April of 2011.
Such a commemorative re-naming honors individuals who have made “extraordinary contributions to the community, which have been consistent and continuous over a considerable period of time.”
During the review process for this re-naming, the Culver City Historical Society discovered that between 1950 and 1952 today’s Bush Way was renamed from Hawekotte Place. Unfortunately, the records available do not indicate the origins of the Hawekotte Place name, nor is there a reason given for the choice of Bush Way.
Since there are no postal addresses associated with this street, no residential or commercial address changes result from the decision.
Albert Vera Jr. was in attendance at the evening’s meeting.
