The Online Community for Culver City – The New Scene
The Culver City Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department is sponsoring a special free screening of the Marx Brothers' "A Night at the Opera" at Veterans Auditorium this Saturday afternoon at 3:00. Certainly the best of movie of the Marx Brothers' MGM period, the movie has tons of laughs, including two bits for the ages: Chico and Groucho negotiating a contract, and a stateroom aboard a ship that gets increasingly stuffed with people ("Hello, room service? Send up a room."). Chico plays the piano, and Harpo smashes it and plays the strings inside as a harp.
You are also encouraged to also visit the Culver City Historical Society's Archive Resource Center (ARC) before the movie, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. The ARC is located at the back of Veterans Memorial Building and admission is free.
The screening is part of Culver City's "Made in Culver City" series, which celebrates movies made in Culver City. Naturally, A Night at the Opera was made when today's Sony Pictures Studio was the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer lot.
Veterans Memorial Building is located at 4117 Overland Avenue in Culver City and free parking is adjacent to the building.
