Culver City residents with curbside recycling service may place their cut-up tree in their yard waste collection container. Please remove tinsel, ornaments, and stands from the tree.
If you live outside Culver City limits you should call the City of Los Angeles Christmas Tree Recycling Hotline: (800) 5-TREE-56 for information about recycling in your neighborhood. Or try calling the Refuse and Recycling Customer Service Office at (310) 253-6400.
Christmas Tree Recycling Program
The City of LA Bureau of Sanitation has CURBSIDE collection for Christmas trees. If your Christmas tree is too big to cut and place it inside the green waste bin, simply place the tree next to your green waste bin on collection day.

Multi-Family Residential Recycling Program Participation (MFRRP) Residents of multifamily buildings are requested to place their Christmas trees at the curbside on the day of collection by the Bureau of Sanitation. Please remove all ornaments, decorations, tinsels, and stand from tree. Visit the City website at www.lacity.org for collection day information Recreation and Park locations and participating Fire Stations Recreation & Park and Fire Station locations will accept Christmas trees for ONE DAY ONLY (see date and time below). Some locations will not be open. Check the listing on this page. There will be NO giveaways and we will NOT be accepting holiday wrapping and packaging material at sites. Please remove all ornaments, decorations, tinsels, and stand from tree. Drop-off Date and Time Sunday, January 6, 2013 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

It kinda depends on your relationship with your garbage person. The advisory from the public works department definitely indicates that you put it in your yard wast collection container -- as opposed to just setting it on the curb. I would advise you to at least try to cut it in half before you jam it in the green can.
How much do you have to cut it up? You can't just put it on the curb?
