Gas executives and allies have long argued that since the hydraulic fracking process takes place miles and miles under the ground, there is no way that the practice could contaminate shallow drinking water aquifers. Now a new study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences presents evidence that natural pathways do exist between deep underlying formations and these shallow drinking water aquifers.
