Red Bread Bakery (on Washington Blvd almost as far west as CostCo) has closed its doors -- after being in it's current location for about a year. That's terrible news for fans of the bakery's dark, dense, bitter, and wonderful rye bread. According to the Los Angeles Times, the owner plans to reopen later this year in a new, larger location. I hope they do, and I hope it's close-by.
Last October, in an article about the best bread and rolls in town, the Los Angeles Times tapped Rose and David Lawrence's Red Bread as having the Best Rye Bread in town. Here's what the article had to say about the (relatively) new bakery in West Culver City:
Like most of Rose Lawrence's breads and pastries, her loaves of rye are leavened with her sourdough mother, which makes them tangy and robust and layered with flavor. This is a dark, dense rye, delicious on its own or slathered with butter. Bonus: Just ask, and the bakery will give you a little of its sourdough starter for your own bread making. $7.
Had anyone else out there fallen in love with this bread?
