The Online Community for Culver City – The New Scene
In an article for Signon San Diego, Beverly Levitt outlines how downtown Culver City became a destination for foodies throughout Southern California.
Challenged by [a Sony-led] renaissance, the city’s redevelopment agency decided that downtown Culver City was long overdue for a makeover, if it was going to make it in the 21st century. They renovated facades, landscaped streets, installed outdoor furniture. They designed a new “city plan” with deep sidewalks and special lighting to jump-start their mandate: Every restaurant within the four-block radius of Culver, Washington and Watseka must offer outdoor dining.
The city installed four free-parking structures, adjusted the traffic signals to accommodate foot traffic, even worked with valets so that you can go to one restaurant for happy hour, walk to another for dinner, and, if you wish, enjoy dessert ... wherever! And, you can pick up your car from any of four locations. Of course, that is because the Downtown Merchants Association worked together to make their area “diner friendly.”
